Bear Drive at ISM - Rest of Week One

This Bear Drive has been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Just by the second day, students were already contributing to the barrel! It was amazing to see the support of the ISM community for this great cause. By the end of this week, the barrel was almost completely filled!

The flyers were passed out very quickly, and were definitely a helpful way to inform the ISM community about the Bear Drive. Some parents expressed that they would have liked to see an email go out to ISM informing about the Bear Drive so that they could have been better prepared to bring in donations. Everyone seemed very excited and happy to support and contribute. One student, Brady from second grade, donated three days in a row!

The Bear Drive will continue next week, until May 6th.

Bear Drive at ISM - Day 1

The Bear Drive has officially begun at ISM! Today, I stood outside for thirty minutes passing out flyers and holding my poster board with the help of my supervisor, Mrs. Novak, and my sister Stella. All of the people that I passed flyers to seemed interested and excited to help. I hope that I will be able to get all of my donations in on time... I will be standing outside tomorrow as well, passing out flyers, then later in the week, just holding up my sign to encourage the ISM community to donate to this great cause.

Bingo for Bears Fundraiser

Mrs. Novak and I drove to Moose Lodge to help with the TBWH fundraiser Bingo for Bears. We got there a bit early, at 12:30pm, and I asked how I could help. I was assigned to sell raffle tickets, and I got my own little table. People started arriving, and came over to me to buy raffle tickets. The prizes were really good... There was definitely some competition for some of the prizes, which led to me selling more tickets! Overall, I made $390! When the bingo game ended, people just hung out, so I helped out at the snack bar. At the end, I helped clean up, and all the TBWH volunteers stood together and enjoyed the leftover cookies. Mrs. Novak and I said goodbye and left at 4:00pm. It was really a nice event, and I had a great time volunteering and help raise money for a good cause.

Post 5

I brought the barrels to both ISM and Portola Hotel & Spa and will begin collection next week. There has been a lot of support from my community partners, which has been very helpful in the process. Ms. Schafer at Portola Hotel & Spa sent out an email to the Portola Staff, reading the following.

Good Morning Portola Team,

Danya, an 8th grade student at the International School of Monterey has been assigned a project that takes place in our community, in which she demonstrates the skills that she has learned throughout her years at school.  She has chosen the community partner, Teddy Bears with Heart (TBWH), as they are an organization who, by doing small things, makes a big impact.

TBWH collects stuffed animals for children in crisis, the terminally ill and the forgotten elderly.  Danya’s project includes the collection of stuffed animals to donate to our community partner, to later be distributed to the organizations they work with.

If you would like to participate, please donate a gently loved or new stuffed animal for this cause. (TBWH accepts all stuffed animals, not only teddy bears). We are accepting donations until Friday, May 6th. A collection barrel has been placed beside the copier in the Executive Office.
Thank you for your donations and support.

I am working on finishing and printing my flyers, and hope to send a mass email at ISM. Mr. Redondo and Mr. Will have given me permission to stand in front of ISM in the mornings to inform parents and students about my Bear Drive.

I will be volunteering at the TBWH fundraiser Bingo for Bears Sunday, April 24th and I am very excited to be helping at the event! This will count towards my service hours, as will the Bear Drive.

Post 4

I brought a barrel to school on Monday, but Mr. Will wasn't there, so I couldn't discuss location for the barrel and such. A few kids noticed the barrel, as it seemed out of place, and I explained to them what my project was and how they can help. My sister, Stella, donated a lot of stuffed animals, and they were a helpful tool when explaining the "teddy bear restrictions". I was able to meet with Mr. Will today Tuesday and he is going to check with Ms. Allen if it would possible to place the barrel in the front office. I hope that I can have my barrel, flyers and pamphlets placed this week, and that I can begin informing my community about this event. As soon as I get the "okay" from Mrs. Allen the bear drive will begin!

Flyer Draft 2

Barrels and Brochures

My supervisor and I drove to Ms. Susie's house this morning and picked up the barrels. Ms. Susie was very prepared for the weather, and had the barrels wrapped up! When I got home, I found a pamphlet inside, which I can use to promote the organization. I was getting worried that I wouldn't get a pamphlet on time... I will be bringing a barrel, the pamphlet, and a flyer to school tomorrow to show Mr. Will. I hope that I get the approval, and that I can begin the bear drive!
